The Do’s and Don’ts - Hair Care Routine

You may be thinking that applying more products on your hair will make your hair shiner, softer and more nourished, but in reality, you may be doing more harm than good. So here’s our Dos and Donts for a proper hair care

5 Hair Dos

1) Brush your scalp & hair with COCOdry's Wooden Oak's Paddle Brush

Before washing your hair, give your scalp a relaxing massage with our wooden oak paddle brush. It promotes hair growth, removes dirt from the scalp, detangles hair and also helps with blood circulation on the scalp.

2) Drying your hair

Once you’re out of your shower, use a microfiber towel to soak up the access water from your hair. Avoid rubbing your hair between non fibre towels. Using a microfiber towel requires less tugging into your hair, hence you won’t pull your hair. Once you have soaked up the access water, use a hair dryer on medium heat and dry your scalp making sure that your scalp is 100% dry to avoid clogging on the scalp. Once your hair is about 70% dry, you can let it air dry.

3) Deep condition your hair weekly with a hair mask

Incomperate a hydrating mask into your hair care routine at least once a week for extra hydration. Hair mask also helps to moisturise and nourish your hair, especially those with dry and frizzyyyy hair.

4) Change your pillowcase once a week

It is important to change your pillowcase every once a week. For those of us who love taking naps, we spend about a third of each day on our beds. Yikes, that’s a lot of time over the course of a week. Our pillowcases accumulate a big amount of bacteria and dead skin. Residue from your hair products all ends up on your pillowcase.

5) Use a silk scrunchie when tying your hair

SIlk is protein-based and contains vital amino acids that help hair retain moisture and promote growth. The moisture retaining properties that can be found in silk fabric makes it an excellent choice for hair accessories. Whether you have long hair or short hair, straight hair or curly hair, replacing your rubber elastic band to a silk scrunchie is a great idea because not only it’ll look good and elegant but silk reduces friction, therefore it will not pull the hair.

5 Hair Don’ts

1) Have the same parting your whole life

It is important to constantly change up the parting of your hair. The longer you weigh your hair down it will cause breakage. Your hair will also get used to the parting and this will result in a big gap.

2) Use dry shampoo

I know you might be tempted to skip hair wash and reach for the fastest option which is using dry shampoo but GURL NO! STOP! Dry shampoos can cause clogged and buildups on the scalp. When there are too many buildups, our follicle will be clogged and suffocated.

3) Over processed your hair

Avoid over-processing your hair which also includes colouring, relaxing as well as using hot tools often. If you plan to curl or straighten your hair using curling iron, use a protective spray beforehand.

4) Not washing your hair for weeks

When you do not wash your hair for weeks, dirt and bacteria will accumulate on the scalp. Your scalp will also be oily and you might end up with a bad odor on the hair. Especially living in Malaysia where the climate is often humid, it is normal to end up with an oily scalp the next day after a fresh hair wash. Oily scalp will also cause the scalp to clog.

5) Apply conditioner or hair mask on your scalp

The purpose of apply conditioner and hair mask is to restore hydration to your hair strands, particularly the ends which tend to get more frizzy and dry. Applying conditioner or hair mask on your scalp can actually weigh your hair down and cause your scalp to end up greasy. It is advised to only apply conditioner on areas that are necessary - mid hair length till the ends.
